WEP 107: If I Were a Wizard, An Interview with Paul Hamilton

Paul is the Head of Learning Technologies (Primary) at Matthew Flinders Anglican College on the Sunshine Coast, Queensland, Australia. He is a leader and innovator in the Edtech world, renowned for his work in AR, AI and iBeacon technology. Paul is a best selling Children’s Picture Book Author, App Developer and sought after Keynote Speaker. Paul is the Author of the best selling children’s book, “If I Were a Wizard…”

Paul has been featured in ‘The Age, ‘Sydney Morning Herald’​, ‘Canberra Times’​ as a leading pioneer in the edtech field. Engage students in mathematics using growth mindset techniques

The most challenging parts of teaching mathematics are engaging students and helping them understand the connections between mathematics concepts. In this volume, you’ll find a collection of low floor, high ceiling tasks that will help you do just that, by looking at the big ideas at the third-grade level through visualization, play, and investigation.

During their work with tens of thousands of teachers, authors Jo Boaler, Jen Munson, and Cathy Williams heard the same message—that they want to incorporate more brain science into their math instruction, but they need guidance in the techniques that work best to get across the concepts they needed to teach. So the authors designed Mindset Mathematics around the principle of active student engagement, with tasks that reflect the latest brain science on learning. Open, creative, and visual math tasks have been shown to improve student test scores, and more importantly change their relationship with mathematics and start believing in their own potential. The tasks in Mindset Mathematics reflect the lessons from brain science that:

  • There is no such thing as a math person – anyone can learn mathematics to high levels.
  • Mistakes, struggle and challenge are the most important times for brain growth.
  • Speed is unimportant in mathematics.
  • Mathematics is a visual and beautiful subject, and our brains want to think visually about mathematics.

With engaging questions, open-ended tasks, and four-color visuals that will help kids get excited about mathematics, Mindset Mathematics is organized around nine big ideas which emphasize the connections within the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) and can be used with any current curriculum.

Apple’s iconic co-founder Steve Jobs had a powerful vision for education, employing technology to make an enormous positive effect on the lives of millions of students. The man Jobs tapped to realize this vision was John D. Couch, a trusted engineer and executive who had a passion for education. Couch believed learning needed to be personal and collaborative. He argued the real purpose of education was to help children discover their uniqueness and empower them to reach beyond their perceived potential. Wes Molyneaux is the director of technology integration in the Elkhart Community School District where he is accountable for the development of processes related to improved professional practice through technology initiatives and innovative professional development. This includes overseeing the technology integration team and ensuring the alignment of professional development to the teacher appraisal system and the strategic plan. Wes started his career at New Trier High School in 2006 teaching biology and anatomy and physiology.
After teaching for a few years he moved into a professional development role spending 50% of his time teaching anatomy and physiology to juniors and seniors and 50% of his time working with teachers to integrate technology into their classrooms.
In addition to teaching and leading professional development at New Trier and now Elkhart, he has presented at a number of different venues including; Mobile2012 in Arizona, ASCD Conference in Chicago, Apple Executive Briefing Center in Chicago, the CPS iPad Academy, several redefining mobile learning events in the Midwest at the ADE2013 Institute in Austin, Texas, at the ADE institute 2014, at EMS2014, at the EdTech Innovation summit in 2016, ConnectEd academy in Dallas in 2016 and 2017, SXSedu 2016, Innovation Summit in Nobelsville, IN in 2017, and at MACUL in 2017.  Wes will be presenting at ISTE in June of 2018, at iEngage-Midwest in April of 2018 and at 2018 IGNITE eLearning Conference in June on innovative teaching methods using iPads in the classroom.
Wes is a Google Certified Teacher Level I and II.  He is also an Apple Distinguished Educator and has served on the Apple Distinguished Educator’s advisory board since January of 2015.
Wes’s website is dedicated to helping teachers and students use the interactivity, portability and anywhere anytime learning capabilities of the iPad to increase student engagement and their overall learning.

John Couch was friend of Steve Job’s and the first Vice President of Apple Education. I had the good fortune of meeting John in 2011 and hearing him speak. He is brilliant. He has always been an advocate for personalized learning, which is quite a buzz-word in education today.

John’s new book, Rewiring Education: How Technology Can Unlock Every Student’s Potential, has a foreword written by Apple’s Co-Founder, Steve Wozniak, who I also had the pleasure of meeting and hearing him speak in 2017. Steve is also an advocate for personalized learning.

I am excited to read this book. If fact, I started it today, and I can’t put it down. Two of my favorite interests combined, education and Apple, all in one book. I have always admired Apple’s dedication and investment in education. This seems even more renewed with their recent, March 2018, Apple Education Event in Chicago. Clearly Education is indeed in Apple’s DNA.

WEP 086 Curriculum as Story, An Interview with Casey Cohen

In this episode of The Wired Educator Podcast, Kelly interviews Apple Distinguished Educator Casey Cohen. Casey received her B.A. at the University of Michigan where she studied English, history, and theater in Michigan’s Residential College. She received her Ed.M. at Harvard’s Graduate School of Education, where she studied English and secondary education in HGSE’s Teacher Education Program. She received her Principal Certification at the University of Pennsylvania where she participated in the School Leadership Program. And, Casey is currently earning her Ed.D. in the Global Educational Leadership Program at Lamar University. She is a proud member of the Apple Distinguished Educator Class of 2015, and she is passionate about sharing her work. She presents at local, state, national, and international conferences on topics that include building school community, global collaboration, up-leveling literature circles, project-based learning in a 1:1 iPad learning environment, and course writing in iTunes U. Beth is passionate about developing schools that encourage high levels of learning and empowerment for all… schools where students and staff are running to get in, not out! To do so, Beth seeks out fun and meaningful ways to interact with students and teachers so they are excited about coming to school. Wearing costumes, singing karaoke, or breaking out some original dance moves as she enthusiastically greets students each morning, or providing innovative  learning time and celebrations for her staff so they feel rejuvenated and excited about teaching is common practice for Beth.

Beth Houf is a middle school principal in central Missouri. She also serves as a facilitator for the DESE Leadership Academy, providing monthly training to state educational leaders. She has spoken at the International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE) Conference, the Association for Middle Level Education National Conference and many state and local educational venues. She is also active in her local, state and national elementary principal associations. Beth has also been a guest lecturer at William Woods University, Westminster University and the University of Missouri. Beth was named a Missouri Exemplary New Principal in 2011 and the Missouri National Distinguished Principal for 2016.

An Interview with Kurt Klynen

In this episode of the Wired Educator Podcast, Kelly interviews Belgium educator, Kurt Klynen.

Kurt Klynen is an Apple Distinguished Educator with over sixteen years teaching ages 2 to 62 and older in a primary and secondary school in Belgium. He is an ad vacate, author, ambassador and advisor in educational curriculum design and instruction. He founded his own educational start-up, ICT Atelier in 2009 with one primary mission: hands-on, inspiring workshops on the integration of technology in education. He currently leads of 25 superstar educators who spread this vision all over Europe. He serves as an advisor for Apple Distinguished Educators EMEIA region, and as an advisor for both Book Widgets and Book Creator.

Having worked with educators and students around the world, Kurt is truly an international educator. Leaning heavily on Kurt’s experiences in many countries, Kelly interviews Kurt about the differences in education around the world and what best practices and theories have emerged. Kurt also shares his passion for his current ADE project, The Joy of Professional Learning.

Kurt has an incredible eye for design, and he is just a brilliant educator. He is very inspiring to talk with, and I am looking forward to collaborating with him in some way in the future.
