WEP 0010: Teach Like a Pirate: Interview with Dave Burgess

An interview with Dave Burgess, author of the widely popular Teach Like a Pirate. Dave tells his story of becoming a pirate and how he is helping educators increase student engagement, boost creativity, and transform lives!

Dave Burgess is a teacher from San Diego, California and a professional magician specializing in stand-up comedy magic. He was a 2001 and 2012 Golden Apple winner in the Grossmont Union High School District and the 2007-2008 Teacher of the Year at West Hills High School. He has been voted a faculty standout for 17 consecutive years in categories such as Most Entertaining, Most Energetic, and Most Dramatic.

He specializes in teaching hard-to-reach, hard-to-motivate students with techniques that incorporate showmanship and creativity.  At a recent ceremony in Washington, D.C., he was awarded the BAMMY for Secondary School Teacher of the Year by the Academy of Education Arts and Sciences.  He is the co-author of P is for PIRATE: Inspirational ABC’s for Educators and the New York Times best-selling author of Teach Like a PIRATE which has sparked an educational revolution all over the world.

Kelly Croy interviews teacher and author Don Wettrick about his book Pure Genius: Building a Culture of Innovation and Taking 20% Time to the Next Level. Don offers great insight to how you can truly create a culture of innovation in your classroom. Don talks about how the idea for his book and creating an innovative classroom all began, and outlines steps you can take and identifies obstacles to avoid. Don states, “There is a big difference between consumers and producers. Genius hour is time to produce.”
