Brian Casto is an amazing educator whom I had the pleasure to meet. He is so humble and kind, but his inspiration and passion for all things education will inspire all of us. you are going to love this episode. 

Brian has impacted lives for more than fifteen years in education. His dedication to preserving West Virginia’s history and culture has earned him accolades, including the Honorary Golden Horseshoe Award. Recently accepted into the Apple Distinguished Educator program, Brian’s story is one of passion and impact. I love the animated videos he created to help his students learn about and have respect for their state. Amazing work.

Brian Casto has been in the education field for fifteen years and holds a bachelor’s degree in social studies, grades 5-12, from Marshall University.  After teaching in both middle and high school for 14 years, he now serves as a New Teacher Specialist in his district.  Mr. Casto received an Honorary Golden Horseshoe Award June 25, 2021, for his two-minute animated videos that preserve the history and culture of West Virginia.  He created these videos for educators across the state in his spare time because there are only a few videos available for West Virginia Studies. He also works with the West Virginia Department of Tourism through his Where in West Virginia is Mr. Casto video series that explores the history, culture, and sites of the state. He is the 2022 West Virginia Teacher of the Year and presently serves on a council of teachers of the year with his state department of education. In 2023, he was accepted into the Apple Distinguished Educator program for his innovative use of technology in and out of the classroom.

“I love thinking of creative ways students and teachers can utilize technology to engage in learning. I especially love using Clips, Keynote, and iMovie in the learning process. I’ve really enjoyed taking what I have learned from working with these programs on my own and incorporating them into the classroom. As with most things, I was a novice when I first began making animated videos and have worked hard in the past 3 years to learn graphic design, video editing, video producing, animation storyboarding, and script writing to tell the story of West Virginia. I believe it was my use of these videos in and out of class that resonated with Apple’s Distinguished Educator Program. When I first started making them, there were very few good media resources available for West Virginia Studies. As an educator, I felt that it was my job to get students excited about topics in class. As I started making and sharing these with my students, covid happened. All of the sudden these engaging videos became a source of engagement for teachers to use across the state. The West Virginia Department of Education began using them in their virtual school program and countless teachers , parents who homeschool, and even students began reaching out to me to express how much they enjoy them. Since then I have worked with the Department of Tourism, Civil War Trails Inc., the Jewish American Military Historical Society, and many others on projects that highlight the importance of preserving history, culture, and sites around my home state.”

Zac Bauermaster is an educational leader and author passionate about people. Zac’s mission field is public education. One of his main tag lines is, “It’s all about people.” His leadership style exemplifies a people-first approach as he seeks to glorify God in all he does. Zac has gained humble confidence through his daily pattern of prayer and reading scripture that he aims to share with others to advance God’s kingdom. Zac released a devotional leadership book in July of 2022 titled, Leading with a Humble Heart: A 40 Day Devotional for Leaders. 

Zac currently serves as principal at Kissel Hill Elementary School, located in the Warwick School District in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. Zac has the tremendous opportunity to lead teachers, support staff, families, and most importantly, the next generation daily. His greatest joy in education is seeing adults leverage their God-given talents and abilities through inspiring kids to find and use their gifts. Before becoming a principal, Zac served public education in various K-12 roles such as assistant principal, administrator of online learning, teacher, and coach. These experiences have grown Zac’s sphere of influence and allowed him the opportunity to develop and maintain lifelong relationships.

Zac received his undergraduate degree from Millersville University in secondary education and completed his Master’s Degree in Educational Technology from Pennsylvania State University. Zac returned to Penn State, where he earned his Principal Certification. Most recently, Zac earned his Doctorate in Educational Leadership and Superintendent Letter of Eligibility from Drexel University. He is a lifelong learner, always looking to learn and grow. His family jokes that he went to school in Kindergarten and hasn’t ever stopped.

Zac continues to grow his leadership influence and share encouragement and positivity, along with the good news of Christ through various social media platforms, magazine publications, and speaking events.

Most importantly, Zac is a husband to his wife Carly, and father to three young kids, Olivia, Eliot, and Isaac. Zac is a firm believer in leading his family first. The family resides in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania.

School psychologist Jillian McFarlan is in her seventh year at Circleville City Schools overseeing an array of student testing, social-emotional/mental health supports, and continuity of care needs. Ms McFarlan has a graduate degree (Ed. S) in School Psychology (University of Florida, 2015) and holds an undergraduate degree in Psychology and Human Development and Family Sciences (Ohio State University, 2012). In addition to her psychology background, Ms McFarlan is currently in Ohio University’s Educational Leadership in Administration cohort to further her studies of helping students and families through this additional Master of Arts degree and principal licensure program. Additionally, she has been an assistant varsity basketball coach for the girl’s program at Circleville. She enjoys reading books, connecting with students, and spending time with family and friends.

In this 221st episode of The Wired Educator Podcast, I interview Bryon Carpenter, an amazing educator, podcaster and thinker. I love his positivity and intentional reflection on what he is learning. Bryon currently serves as a secondary math, science, and technology teacher at the Abbotsford Virtual School since 2010, in Abbotsford, BC, Canada. He took a leave from AVS in 2015-16 to serve the Abbotsford School District as a Helping Teacher for Technology.   During that time he became a Google Certified Educator and met EdTech Team which inspired him want to bring their Google Summit to Abbotsford.  Before this he did not consider himself “a creative” but his mind has changed as he has grown in his utility of EdTech tools, namely Adobe Spark and Google tools.  Bryon is also an Adobe Creative Educator.

Bryon says, “Technology is merely a tool, which when wielded appropriately can enhance this human endeavor we call education.”

Tammy Musiowsky-Borneman is the founder of and professional learning facilitator at Plan Z Professional Learning Services, an elementary teacher, and ASCD author. She has experience teaching and leading in Hawai’i, Singapore, New York City, and Edmonton, Canada. She is an active member of ASCD and is an ASCD Emerging Leader Alumni. Tammy and co-author, C.Y. Arnold wrote the recently published ASCD book, The Minimalist Teacher, as well as other digital publications for ASCD. Tammy has written several guest blogs for ASCD Inservice, Express, EdWeek Teacher blog, and Achieve the Core. She writes on topics such as creating cultures of learning, student engagement, inclusivity, and student agency. 

C. Y. Arnold is an Australian educator with experience at home and abroad. She has worked in Australia, Japan, Singapore, Belgium, and The Netherlands as a teacher, coach, mentor, co-teacher, coordinator, tutor, and supervisor from early childhood education to adult education. Her dedication to teaching has led her to serve on the board of the Singapore chapter of SENIA, publish educational articles, and present at various international and Australian conferences. Her interests in education include exploring research-based pedagogy and practice, inclusive education, quality early childhood education, inquiry, and promoting well-being for students and colleagues.
