This is the Wired Educator Podcast, Episode 260! I am so excited for you to hear this conversation. I’m sitting down with a good friend, a colleague, and a truly great leader in Ohio: Mark Bagley, the Superintendent of Van Wert City Schools.

In this episode, we learn exactly what it takes to lead a district with authenticity and how to make a real difference in the lives of both colleagues and children. Mark is a “servant leader” in the truest sense of the word. Whether it’s picking up trash, helping in a classroom when there are no subs, or standing out at the bus hub every single morning, Mark leads from the trenches.

You are going to love this interview. Buckle up!

Listen HERE!

A Great Week to be a Wired Educator

Before we dive into the interview, I have to tell you—it has been an amazing week.

I was recently invited to Gibsonburg Schools to share my book, Unthink Before Bed, for their Literacy Night. It was a blast. I shared the books I loved as a kid, talked about the “why” behind reading, and even did some live drawing of the characters. But the real star was my dog, Jedi. He showed up in a tie, met the kids, and did a few tricks! Gibsonburg even pre-ordered copies for the families. It’s moments like these that remind me why we do what we do.

I also want to give a huge shout-out to Joe Miller for organizing the third annual SEL Symposium at Port Clinton City Schools. We had world-class speakers, and the energy was incredible. If you haven’t heard it yet, go back a few episodes and listen to my interview with Joe about how he built that event.

Coming Soon to the Podcast:

Casey Cooney: We recorded a live broadcast about Rigor and Relationships in the Age of AI.

Mark Perna: Author of Answering Why, talking about career and life skills.

Key Takeaways from Mark Bagley

Mark and I covered a lot of ground in this interview. Here are a few “nuggets” that every educator needs to hear:

The Power of “E + R = O”: Mark is a firm believer in the Focus 3 system: Event + Response = Outcome. We can’t always control the events, but we can control our response. That response dictates the outcome for our students and staff.

“What Happened to You?”: Instead of asking “What is wrong with you?”, we must ask “What happened to you?” Understanding trauma is the first step toward regulation and learning.

The CEO Program: Van Wert is doing something revolutionary with their seniors through the Career Education Opportunities program, getting kids into the workforce to learn real-world skills.

The “Thankfulness Walk”: Mark starts his day with gratitude. In a job that is 24/7, finding that space to be grateful is essential for longevity.

“The culture of your school will never be higher than the highest adult. We have to make sure we keep on raising our adults.” — Mark Bagley

We talk about: What really is SEL? Is it real? How do we do it? Why? What in the world is ‘trauma informed education’? Why do we need it? What difference does it make. Jillian is a fantastic resource who takes simplifies these concepts and shows us what they really are, how they matter, and what we can do. You are going to love this authentic and helpful conversation. You are going to leave this podcast a better educator. This is one of my favorites.

There’s a lot of talk right now about social emotional learning and trauma informed education, but I think few people really know what they’re talking about. Jillian sets the record straight,

Jillian McFarlan, school psychologist, Circleville City Schools

School psychologist Jillian McFarlan is in her seventh year at Circleville City Schools overseeing an array of student testing, social-emotional/mental health supports, and continuity of care needs. Ms McFarlan has a graduate degree (Ed. S) in School Psychology (University of Florida, 2015) and holds an undergraduate degree in Psychology and Human Development and Family Sciences (Ohio State University, 2012). In addition to her psychology background, Ms McFarlan is currently in Ohio University’s Educational Leadership in Administration cohort to further her studies of helping students and families through this additional Master of Arts degree and principal licensure program. Additionally, she has been an assistant varsity basketball coach for the girl’s program at Circleville. She enjoys reading books, connecting with students, and spending time with family and friends.

It enchants and inspires some and annoys others.

Every teacher on the planet should hold their head high and be proud of how they leveled-up and continued to make a difference while teaching in quarantine, from quarantine, to quarantine, and remote, and every other possible scenario the last couple of years.

Every single example an individual heroic memory. Or at least it should have been. Too often teachers compare themselves to other teachers and beat themselves up too much about the emergency teaching that had to occur. Everyone did their best and impacted lives. No one was perfect. Everyone tried. We should all be proud.

Still there are three stories I will always remember most from our teaching in quarantine:

Jon Jarc collecting students’ 3-D designs remotely, printing them from his house and shipping them to his students’ homes. Whoa!

Jen Davis, Port Clinton Middle School art teacher, hosting a virtual art show for students in quarantine. Go Jen!

Keven Rinaman 3-D printing medical safety shields for hospitals. (The story is in his new book 3DU: A Guide to 3D Printing in Every Classroom.) Congrats Keven!

It’s unfair for me to name just three. There are hundreds in my own district. There are millions of awesome examples from around the world, but for whatever reason, these three resonate with me and will forever be remembered. I really do hope you will add your memory and example in the comments below so others can see them. Thanks for considering.

~Kelly

Tip: How to Read More Books Than You Ever Imagined: I recently came across an amazing app for my phone called Blinkist that provides written and audio summaries of books that I can consume like potato chips. (If you’ve never seen me consume potato chips, you’re welcome.) I was skeptical of Blinkist, but tried the free 7-Day trial, and then I fell in love. I know I’ll never be able to consume all the books I want to read about becoming a better human, building a better business, and many other important categories, yet Blinkist breaks down the core concepts of books I know I’ll never get to and offers it in easily consumable “blinks” that allow me to get the gist of an entire book in about 12 minutes. I kid you not. I’m now a subscriber. Yes, of course I still read, and a lot, and I still listen to audio books on Audible, regularly, but I love Blinkist for those books that I just want the essence of to apply in my life. You can try Blinkist for 7-Days free, and I think you will thank me; it is one of the most amazing technologies I have run across in a long time. That’s saying a lot. (Share this on Twitter)
